Chapter 6

The morning sun casts a golden glow over the castle house and its surrounding hills and fields. Inside the dining hall, Sophie and her female guests sit at the table enjoying their morning coffee.

“How was your rest last night?” Sophie asks her guests. “Did you sleep well?”

“Couldn’t have been better,” Vanessa answers with a radiant smile.

Cecilia is glowing as well. “I slept like a baby.”

“Good morning, ladies.” Nathan appears in the doorway, looking dashing in a polo shirt tucked into jeans.

The ladies greet him as he takes a seat next to Cecilia. Before sitting down, he kisses the girl on the lips, making her blush.

After siping his coffee, he glances at Sophie and Vanessa across the table. While Vanessa looks surprised, Sophie can hardly hide her smile.

Nathan’s eyes linger on Sophie for a second before he speaks casually. “So what’s today’s plan? I assume Patrick will join us soon?”

“Actually, not until afternoon,” Cecilia answers. “He texted me last night, telling me he had to meet with a few designers in Paris first.”

“That’s too bad,” Nathan mumbles.

Cecilia shrugs. “It doesn’t matter. We can continue our horse-riding lessons.”

“No problem.” Nathan kisses the girl again.

Vanessa and Sophie exchange a look. “I can take you for a walk in the forest behind the castle, if you’re interested.”

“Why? Of course. I’ll be delighted.”

“Forest?” Cecilia asks with sparkling eyes. “I want to go, too.”

“Sure we’ll all go to the forest first, and then you and Nathan can ride,” Sophie says. “We’ll go right after breakfast.”

Moments later, the group is hiking on a path next to the castle, going up the hill toward a forest. Cecilia and Nathan walk side by side in front while Sophie and Vanessa lag behind them.

“This is quite a hike,” Vanessa says to Sophie. “I wish I had brought my tennis shoes. These sandals are fine when sightseeing in the city, but not so comfortable now.”

“We could rest by the boulders over there,” Sophie says, pointing ahead.

“Oh yes. I need that.”

Nathan and Cecilia continue with their walk. Nathan’s phone chimes with a text. He checks it promptly and starts to type. For the next few minutes, he’s busy texting instead of talking to Cecilia.

“Who is it?” Cecilia asks when he finally puts his phone away. “Your girlfriend?”

“No, it’s my mom. She wants to know what I’ve been doing.”

“I see. What does your mom do?”

“She used to be a fashion model, just like Sophie. But she became a real estate agent later.”

“What about your dad? What does he do?”

“I don’t know. Never met him,” Nathan says with a shrug. “He and my mom had a one-night-stand and took off. My mom keeps his identity a secret even from me. But I assume he’s some rich guy, and that’s why we can afford private school and riding lessons.”

“I see,” Cecilia gazes at him with sympathy. “Don’t you want to know who he is?”

“I wanted to when I was in junior high. I remember getting mad when my mom wouldn’t tell me. But I don’t care anymore.
